Horse Assessment at the
Oldenburg Breeding Society

The Oldenburg Breeding Societies have established their own very proven and meaningful system for evaluating horses. The linear description indicates very precisely how the horse presents itself. It records the phenotype, in other words, the external appearance of the horse. The horse's strengths and weaknesses, as well as individual characteristics, are not assessed with scores, but are described in a value-free manner based on clearly defined characteristics. This type of assessment helps breeders to optimize their future breeding decisions regarding their own breeding goal.

In addition, so-called Linear Profiles (phenotype profiles) contain much more information about a horse than a score sheet. The latter does not contain any information about the strengths and weaknesses or individual characteristics of the horse. Alongside the Linear Profiles the Oldenburg Breeding Society also continues to award classic grades on a scale of 0-10, for example at the mare performance test. Mares receive an overall grade for their appearance and quality as broodmares when officially entered in the stud book. All the horse's characteristics are considered here: type, movement, correctness of gait, harmony of conformation and limbs.

Oldenburg
Inspection Commission

The Oldenburg Inspection Commission is made up of experienced horse breeders, successful riders and trainers who, with their extensive experience and equestrian expertise in all disciplines, support the Oldenburg Breeding Societies in the assessment of mares and foals.

Together with the full-time employees of the Oldenburg Societies, the volunteer judges travel throughout Germany and Europe, as well as to the United States and Canada, to inspect and evaluate Oldenburg horses.
