Foals
Oldenburg foals are allowed to make their first public appearance at their dam's side at the registration dates from mid-April to the end of August each year. For the approximately 7,500 foals born each year, this is not only about registration, which is required for the issuing of passports, but also a chance to be awarded a coveted Foal Premium, which is awarded to particularly good foals.
3 Steps to a Foal Passport!
Registration with the Oldenburg Breeding Society is required for admission to the Breeding Society and for the issue of a horse passport.
First, the covering of the mare must be reported to the Oldenburg Breeding Society. In most cases, this is done automatically by the stallion stud when a covering certificate is presented at the covering. If the covering has not yet been reported to the Breeding Society, this report must be made. Members receive the covering certificate in their OL or OS account. The stud stations can also use a blank covering certificate if they have all the mare data. For mares that do not belong to a German breed and have not yet been entered in the stud book, a copy of the horse passport must also be attached to the covering information so that the mare can be entered in the database.
When the covering has been reported to the association, the breeders must register the foal. This is done via the OL or OS account for members of the Oldenburg Breeding Society.
In your account, you will find the button “Foaling Report”. Follow the instructions on the screen and enter all the required data. When you report the foal’s birth, you must register your foal for a foal registration appointment. It is always possible to register for another appointment or to re-register before the entry deadline. After the official entry deadline, please contact the Foal Administration.
When you report your foal’s birth, you also register it for foal registration. Here, the foal is inspected by the registration officers of the Oldenburg Breeding Society and identification characteristics are noted. This includes the drawing of markings and hair swirls and the setting of a Microchip with a unique Microchip number. In addition, a hair sample is taken from the foal's mane or tail to verify paternity and maternity beyond doubt.

Awards
for Foals
Premium Foal
Foals of above-average quality are awarded the title OL or OS “Premium Foal”.
In the case of OL foals, an additional requirement for a Premium is that both the dam and the sire of the foal are eligible to be entered in the Stud Book I or Stallion Book I at the time of covering or at the latest at the time of registration of the foal. The award of the foal, for example, plays a role in the awarding of points to achieve the Elite title for Mares.
Elite Foal
Foals that display outstanding quality are awarded the title OL or OS “Elite Foal”.
In the case of OL foals, the additional requirement for an Elite award is that both the dam and the sire of the foal are eligible entered in the Stud Book I or Stallion Book I at the time of covering or at the latest at the time of registration of the foal. The award of the foal plays a role, for example, in the awarding of points for mares to achieve the Elite title.
Foal Sales
The Oldenburg Breeding Societies offer both Foal Auctions and the opportunity to market foals through the ehorses sales platform.
In addition to the dates for the awarding of Premium and Elite titles, selection dates, including photo and video appointments, are also held for the coveted Foal Auctions. You can find the dates and further information about the auctions and selection dates under the heading “Dates”.
