Stallion Directory

The Oldenburg Stallion Directory shows all the licensed and tested stallions that are approved for Oldenburg breeding, registered for the current breeding year and entered in Stallion Book I. You will also find pictures, further information on their offspring and the stallion's location in the stallion distribution plan. We recommend that you see the stallions or their offspring in person if possible.

Stallions that have been licensed but have not yet been entered in Stallion Book I because they have not yet participated in the Stallion Performance Test or have not passed it in full are not listed in the Stallion Directory. This particularly affects younger stallions. In this case, please contact the stallion stud for more information.

For stallions that are not listed in the Stallion Book I but are found in the Stallion Directory, a difference in fees may apply when the foal passport is issued. Schedule of fees.

Pre-selection

There are various opportunities and times in a stallion's career to present him for licensing with the Oldenburg Breeding Societies. To be admitted to a Main Licensing (Young Stallion and Saddle Licensing), the stallions must pass a Stallion Pre-selection.

Pre-selection

Dressage Stallions

Showjumping Stallions

1. Free running with photo/video recording to assess type and movement

1. Free running with photo/video recording to assess type and movement

2. Pre-selection
Inspection on hard ground to assess the exterior and the correctness of the gait

3. Examination
Assessment of the walk and the overall impression with admission decision

The Pre-Selection for the Saddle Licensing is arranged according to the age of the stallion and when the approval takes place. However, it always includes an assessment on hard ground. Depending on their age and level of training, the stallions are also presented on the lunge or under the saddle.

Licensing

  1. Young Stallion Licensing
  2. Saddle Licensing
  3. Home Licensing and Approvals

The Young Stallion Licensing take place annually for two- and three-year-old dressage and showjumping stallions.

At the approvals, the stallions are judged on their movement, jumping technique, conformation, gait, exterior, type and overall impression.

All stallions are inspected on the hard ground, while running free and in the walking ring. The dressage stallions are also presented on the lunge, while the show jumpers show their jumping abilities in the free jumping.

The best stallions of the licensing are ranked according to their special quality in the Premium Lot with the announcement of a Champion Stallion and further ranking of the top lot. Afterwards, the stallions that are for sale, licensed and non-licensed, are auctioned off at the Stallion Auction.

Like the Young Stallion Licensing, the Saddle Licensing is a large licensing event that takes place once a year in combination with an auction at the Oldenburg Horse Center in Vechta.

At the Saddle Licensing the stallions are not only judged in hand, and on the hard ground, free running and free jumping but also under the saddle from their own riders. In addition to this a test rider also assesses the stallion´s rideability. At this type of licensing, the stallions may come from different age groups. A Pre-Selection for this event also takes place about four weeks before the Licensing.

Stallions that have already been licensed in another recognized breeding association or that have not taken part in a Main Licensing can also be presented for Licensing or recognized for Oldenburg Breeding at a home appointment. In this case, the Licensing Commission comes to the home yard and the stallions complete the all the components of the Licensing at their home yard, with the age-appropriate requirements.

Stallion Performance Test

In order to be provisionally or permanently entered in the Stallion Book I of the Verband der Züchter des Oldenburger Pferdes e.V. (OL) or that of the Springpferdezuchtverband Oldenburg-international e.V all licensed stallions must meet the relevant performance requirements.

The Stallion Performance Tests in Germany are organized by the German Equestrian Federation (FN). The recognised Stallion Performance Tests are also carried out in Vechta at the Oldenburg Breeding Society.

Details

The Stallion Performance Test has been subject to a points system since 2025 and the Sport Tests for the four- and five-year-old stallions have been dropped. They have been replaced by Stallion Performance Tests that will take place as part of selected State and Regional Championships. The 50-day Performance Test and Assessment Test (short) will remain in place, as will the option of providing proof of performance through competition. The new multi-level points system determines how initial entry, or final entry into the Stallion Book I can be achieved. A total of 10 Performance Test Points is required for final entry in the Stallion Book I.

The following levels are planned:

0 Points – provisional entry in Stallion Book I as a 3-year-old stallion with a positive Licensing result

4 Points – provisional entry in Stallion Book I as a 4-year-old stallion

8 Points – provisional entry in Stallion Book I as a 5-year-old stallion

10 Points – final entry in the Stallion Book I

Applications can only be made via the portal of the German Equestrian Federation (FN). Further information and the relevant guidelines for Stallion Performance Tests can be found at the following link:

Stallion Awards

  1. Main Premium
  2. Oldenburg Future Sire
  3. Oldenburg Elite Stallion

The Oldenburg Main Premium is awarded annually to young stallions (Stallion Book I) that have distinguished themselves through the quality of their first Oldenburg foal crop. In addition to their first performance as a sire, their own performance at Stallion Performance Tests or in competition and their presentation at the Main Premium Show during the Oldenburg Licensing are considered in the assessment. If several stallions are considered for the award, they are ranked. One winner is selected from each breeding society (OL and OS).

Stallions whose oldest offspring are no older than 9 years old can receive the Oldenburg Future Sire Award. The stallion must be actively included in the Stallion Directory.

A certain percentage of all offspring of show age must be successfully competing. The stallion must have a minimum number of OL or OS registered offspring, a portion of which must have been officially evaluated by the Oldenburg Society at the age of two and a half years or older. This provides information on the conformation, movement and/or jumping ability. Dressage horses must belong to the top 10% of the FN-Zuchtwertschätzung (National Breeding Evaluation) in competition sport. Showjumpers must have a HEK-Zuchtwert (National Breeding Evaluation Score).

Mann mit Sieger Oldenburger Future Sire 2025

The distinction of being named an Oldenburg Elite Stallion is the highest honour for stallions in Oldenburg horse breeding. It is a Premium Award for older stallions that have proven themselves in breeding and whose offspring are not older than 15 years old. The stallion must be actively listed in the Stallion Directory and have a minimum number of OL or OS-registered offspring, some of whom must have been officially assessed by the Oldenburg Breeding Society at the age of two and a half years or older. This means that information is available on the conformation, movement and/or jumping ability. A high percentage of the offspring that are active in the sport should have achieved success at S level (PSG) or higher. At least 10 offspring have achieved success at S*** level (Grand Prix) and higher. This title is included in the equine passports of the offspring, thus enhancing and adding to the horse's pedigree. This also means that titles in the pedigree are no longer reserved just for the mares. For our breeders, this is an additional distinction that the offspring of renowned sires can show in their breeding.
