Mares in
Oldenburg Horse Breeding
The Oldenburg Breeding Societies implement a liberal breeding policy and are open to bloodlines from other breeding associations. At the same time, the Oldenburg mare lines are of particular importance in Oldenburg horse breeding. These lines have been successfully developed and continued by breeders over generations. They form the valuable basis for reliable, successful horse breeding. The breeding significance of the Oldenburg foundation mares is also symbolized by the naming. Broodmare names traditionally begin with the first letter and often even the root of the maternal family. For example, the dam lines of Cileste, Rudilore, Fiesta, Weissena (Weihegold), Rikki, Cinderella, Blankenese, Egale and many more have become famous in the pedigrees of internationally successful sport horses and stud stallions. If you would like to learn more about the Oldenburg dam lines, we recommend the book “Das Oldenburger Pferd”. We would also be happy to research the line of your mare.
Registration of Mares
Members can register their mares for studbook entry via the “events” section of their online account. If you would like to register your mare for studbook entry and this mare is not currently carrying a foal, please contact the respective studbook. In principle, every Foal Registration date and every Mare Performance Test can also be used for the registration of mares. If your mare is already carrying a foal, your mare will automatically be entered in the stud book when the foal is registered.
If you have any further questions about registration, please feel free to contact us by phone or email:

Mare Performance Test
Mare Performance Tests take place throughout Germany in May and June. All mares are first presented free-running, then the showjumping mares are additionally presented for the free-jumping. In the second part of the test, the mares are presented in the basic gaits under the saddle and then ridden by a test rider to check their rideability. Finally, the mares receive an assessment in the form of grades and a linear description.
The Mare Performance Test is the basis for awarding the Oldenburg (OL) or Oldenburg-International (OS) Main Premiums as well as Premium Award. The selection of mares admitted to the Elite Broodmare Show is also made after passing this test.
The Mare Performance Tests not only provide information on the mare's suitability as a riding horse but also provide information on the inheritance of sires and dams. The results serve as a basis for the linear breeding value estimation. In addition, the results provide initial indications of a mare's value for the population. The Oldenburg Breeding Society offers performance tests at several locations as a one-day event (so-called field test).
Minimum age: 3 years
Breeds: All breeds that are approved according to the breeding program.

The Mare Performance Test is an aptitude test and always takes place in combination with a Stud Book Registration in both Oldenburg Breeding Societies.
The day of the event begins with the Stud Book Registration. This includes measuring the height of the mares and checking the identification marks of colour, markings and Microchip number based on the equine passport.
This is followed by the Exterior Assessment while walking and trotting in - hand. An overall score is given for the appearance as a broodmare. This mark is not part of the examination results of the Mare Performance Test.
Dates
You can find all dates in the events section. You can also make entries for the dates here. Please have the horse's life number ready.
Results
You can find the results of the Mare Performance Test and the linear description of the mare in the OL-account under Documents.
Entry
Members can make the entry for a Mare Performance Test in the events section of their online account.

Awards for Mares
in the Oldenburg Breeding

Please note the differences in the requirements for OL and OS and the more detailed information in the respective breeding program. There are three different awards for mares in the Oldenburg Breeding Programs:

The OL-/OS-Verbandsprämie (Premium Award)
The Verbandsprämie (Premium Award) can be awarded in different cases, for example:
1. The mare is registered in a Stud Book for the first time with her first foal at foot: She receives a registration score of 7.5 or better and her foal is at least recognized as a Premium Foal.
2. The mare successfully passes the Mare Performance Test at the Oldenburg Breeding Society or has the required performance record in sport and receives a registration score of at least 7.0.
The OL-/OS Hauptprämie (Main Premium Award)
The OL-/OS-Hauptprämie (Main Premium Award) for mares has replaced the title of State Premium in Oldenburg horse breeding for several years. Mares that successfully pass the Oldenburg Mare Performance Test, show well above-average performance or can demonstrate the required athletic ability and receive a minimum score of 7.0 (OS mares) or 7.5 (OL mares) when entered in the respective stud book, can be awarded the OL-/OS-Hauptprämie (Main Premium Award). With the birth of an OL/OS-registered foal, the entitlement is converted into the Premium.
Elite mares
The title “Elite Mare” is the highest distinction for broodmares in the Oldenburg Breeding Societies. All mares used in Oldenburg breeding can be awarded the title Elite Mare upon application if they have achieved the appropriate performance themselves or through their offspring. For all foals registered after the title has been awarded, the dam's title is printed in the foal passport, attesting to the quality of the mare.
A point system has been developed to evaluate the performance of mares.
If a mare reaches 10 points, she can be awarded the title of Elite Mare. The prerequisite is that the mare is the dam of at least one Oldenburg foal.

Oldenburg Elite
Mare Show Rastede
The best mares are honoured each year at the Oldenburg State Show in the Rastede Castle Park in mid-July. The coveted Oldenburg Champion Mare title is awarded during the Brillantring.
The mares invited have particularly impressed at their Mare Performance Tests and have been awarded the title of Oldenburg Main Premium Candidate (OLHPr.A.) or Main Premium Candidate Oldenburg-International (OSHPr.A.). The best of these mares are selected for the final ring, the Brillantring.
The two Oldenburg Breeding Societies line up the mares on the Brillantring and select one Champion Mare each. Of course, in addition to conformation and type, the OL mares are judged especially for their dressage ability, while the OS mares are judged for their free jumping. In Rastede, the free jumping of the OS mares is shown on a big screen for the spectators. During the festive award ceremony, mares, owners and, of course, their breeders are celebrated in a fitting manner.
